Cycles, made manageable

Getting Started

Day by Day is designed to help you track medications, symptoms, and wellbeing during chemotherapy treatment cycles. The app works entirely on your device – no account needed, and your data stays private.

Adding to Your Home Screen

For the best experience, add Day by Day to your phone's home screen:

  • iPhone/iPad: Tap the Share button (square with arrow) in Safari, then "Add to Home Screen"
  • Android: Tap the menu (three dots) in Chrome, then "Add to Home Screen"

Once added, the app opens full-screen like a native app and works offline.

Initial Setup

Before you start, go to Settings and:

  • Enter your name (your first name will be used in greetings)
  • Add your email address for daily summaries
  • Optionally add your date of birth and patient/hospital number
  • Set your cycle length (duration of each cycle in days)
  • Set how many cycles you'll complete
  • Set your cycle dates (Day 0 = chemotherapy day)
  • Add emergency contact numbers
  • Review and adjust medications if needed

Offline Use

After the first load, Day by Day works completely offline. You can track medications, symptoms, and notes without an internet connection. The daily quote feature requires internet but the app remains fully functional without it.

Swipe Navigation

On touch devices, swipe left or right to move between the Today, Calendar, and Settings views.

Today View

The Today view is your daily dashboard, showing everything relevant to the current day.

What You'll See

  • Daily Quote: An inspirational message that changes each day
  • Milestone Messages: Encouraging messages appear on key days like the halfway point or final day of your cycle
  • Emergency Contacts: Quick-dial numbers (if configured)
  • Scheduled Medications: Organised by time of day
  • As-Needed Medications: PRN medications with counters
  • Symptom Check-in: Temperature, weight, and how you're feeling
  • Notes: Space for observations
  • Food & Drink: Space for food and drink notes
  • Today's Win: A place to note something positive

Time Periods

Medications are grouped by time of day, each with a colour:

  • Morning – 06:00 to 12:00
  • Afternoon – 12:00 to 18:00
  • Evening – 18:00 to 22:00
  • Bedtime – 22:00 to 00:00

Milestone Messages & Celebrations

Day by Day recognises important moments in your treatment journey with encouraging messages and celebrations:

  • Daily Milestones: Key treatment days (like the day before chemo, treatment day, halfway through a cycle, or the final day) show supportive messages
  • Cycle Completions: When you complete a cycle, you'll see a celebration message the next day recognising your achievement
  • Treatment Anniversaries: Important markers like one week, one month, three months, and beyond are quietly celebrated
  • Public Holidays: Gentle greetings on days like Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Halloween

These messages can be turned off in Settings if you prefer a simpler view.

Tracking Medications

Marking as Taken

Tap any medication card to mark it as taken. The app records the exact time and shows a green checkmark. Tap again to undo if you made a mistake.

Medication Info Links

Many medications have an "info" link that opens a patient information page. This is useful for checking side effects or interactions.

As-Needed (PRN) Medications

Use the + and − buttons to log doses of PRN medications like pain relief or anti-nausea tablets. The counter shows how many you've taken versus the daily maximum.

Progress Bar

The progress bar at the top shows what percentage of your scheduled medications you've taken today. This only counts scheduled medications, not PRN ones.

Symptom Tracking

Temperature

Enter your temperature in °C. If it reaches 38°C or above, a message will appear reminding you to contact the oncology team.

Important
A temperature of 38°C or above during chemotherapy can indicate infection and needs prompt medical attention. Don't wait – call your oncology team.

Weight

Daily weight tracking helps identify significant changes. The app shows your change from baseline (your first recorded weight) in both kg and percentage.

Symptom Scales

Rate each symptom from 1 to 5. The colour of each button reflects whether higher or lower is better for that symptom. The symptoms tracked are:

  • Fatigue/Energy – 1 = good energy, 5 = exhausted
  • Nausea – 1 = none, 5 = severe
  • Pain – 1 = none, 5 = severe
  • Appetite – 1 = no appetite, 5 = normal
  • Mood – 1 = low, 5 = good
  • Mouth Sores – 1 = none, 5 = severe
  • Sleep – 1 = very poor, 5 = slept well
  • Bowel Function – 1 = constipated, 3 = normal, 5 = diarrhoea
  • Concentration – 1 = poor, 5 = good

Tap a number to select it. Tap again to deselect. These ratings help you and your care team spot patterns over time.

Today's Win

Even on difficult days, noting something positive can help. It doesn't have to be big – maybe you managed a short walk, enjoyed a meal, or had a good conversation.

Calendar View

Cycle Progress

At the top, you'll see how far through the current cycle you are, with a progress bar and day count.

Switching Cycles

Use the cycle pills (Cycle 1, Cycle 2, etc.) to view different cycles. Only cycles with dates set in Settings will be available.

Calendar Days

Each day shows the calendar date and cycle day (D-1, D0, D+1, etc.). Days are colour-coded:

  • Orange background: Chemotherapy day (Day 0)
  • Purple background: Injection day (Day +1)
  • Green border: Today
  • Green background with ✓: Completed days

Tap any day to view or edit that day's data in the Today view.

Quick Navigation

When viewing past or future days, a "Back to Today" button appears to quickly return to the current date.

Settings

Your Details

Enter your name, email address, date of birth, and patient/hospital number. Your first name is used in the daily greeting, and your details appear on summary reports and PDFs.

Emergency Contacts

Add phone numbers for your oncology unit, out-of-hours service, and GP. These appear on the Today screen for quick access – tap to dial.

Cycle Configuration

Customise your treatment cycle settings to match your specific protocol:

  • Cycle Length: Set the number of days in each cycle (default: 21 days). This can range from 1 to 60 days depending on your treatment protocol.
  • Number of Cycles: Set how many cycles you'll complete (default: 6 cycles). You can configure between 1 and 12 cycles.

These settings affect how the calendar displays your cycles and which days appear in your medication schedule. If you change the cycle length, you may need to adjust your medication day ranges accordingly.

Cycle Dates

Enter the Day 0 (chemotherapy day) for each cycle as you get scheduled. The app calculates all other days automatically based on your configured cycle length. The number of cycle date fields matches your configured number of cycles.

Medications

View all your scheduled medications. You can:

  • Add new medications with the + button
  • Edit any medication by tapping it or the Edit link
  • Delete medications with the 🗑️ Delete link
  • Reset to the default schedule if needed

Each medication shows which times of day it's taken (checkboxes) and the day range.

Appearance

Toggle between dark and light mode, show or hide daily messages, and choose an accent colour that appears throughout the app.

Notifications

Day by Day can send gentle reminders whilst you're using the app to help you stay on track with logging and backups. All notifications are optional and can be customised to your preferences.

Important: How Notifications Work
Notifications appear when the app is open or running in the background (browser tab open but minimised). They will not appear if you've completely closed the browser or app. This is a technical limitation of web apps without a server backend. Since Day by Day is designed for daily use, notifications serve as helpful reminders whilst you're already using the app rather than alerts to open it.

Enabling Notifications

To use notifications, go to Settings > Notifications and enable the feature. You'll be asked for permission to show notifications – this is required for the feature to work.

Available Reminders

  • Daily check-in: A friendly reminder each day to log your medications and symptoms (default: 9am)
  • Temperature reminder: Optional daily reminder to log your temperature (default: 10am)
  • Weekly backup: Reminder to backup your data (default: Sunday 8pm)
  • End of cycle: Notification on the last day of each cycle suggesting you generate a PDF summary

Customising Notifications

You can adjust:

  • Which notifications are enabled
  • What time each notification appears
  • Which day for weekly reminders
  • Quiet hours (when notifications won't disturb you)
  • Snooze duration
  • Vibration and sound preferences

Missed Notifications

If you open the app after a scheduled notification time has passed, the app will detect this and show you a gentle reminder. This helps you stay on track even if you didn't have the app open at the exact scheduled time.

Notification Actions

Most notifications include action buttons so you can respond without fully opening the app. For example, "Open App" or "Snooze" buttons.

Best Practice
Since the app is designed for daily tracking, make it part of your routine to open it at key times (e.g., with morning medications). Notifications will then reinforce this habit by reminding you whilst you're already engaged with the app.

Daily Summary

Tap "Send Daily Summary Email" to generate a report of the day's data. This opens your email app with a pre-filled message containing:

Tip
Send the daily summary to a family member or caregiver to keep them informed, or use it as a record for clinic appointments.

Cycle Summary PDF

At the end of each cycle, you can generate a comprehensive PDF summary to share with your care team or keep for your records.

What's Included

  • Patient details and cycle information
  • Medication adherence statistics
  • Symptom trend charts for the entire cycle
  • Daily notes and observations (on a dedicated page)
  • Food & drink log (on a dedicated page)
  • Wins & positive moments (on a dedicated page)
  • Weight changes throughout the cycle
  • Temperature readings
Tip
Generate the PDF at the end of each cycle before your next appointment. It provides a complete visual summary that's easier to review than individual daily summaries.

Backup & Restore

Why Back Up?

Your data is stored locally in your browser. It can be lost if you clear your browser data, switch devices, or reset your phone. Regular backups protect against this.

Export Backup

Downloads a JSON file containing all your data – medications, tracking history, settings, everything. Save this file somewhere safe like iCloud, Google Drive, or email it to yourself.

Import Backup

Restore from a previously exported backup file. This replaces your current data.

Clear Tracking Data

Removes all tracking data (symptoms, medications taken, weights, notes) whilst keeping your personal details and cycle configuration. Use this if you want to start tracking fresh but keep your setup. This cannot be undone.

Reset All Data

⚠️ Completely resets the app to default, removing ALL data including personal details, cycle dates, medications, and tracking. Use this only if you want to completely start over. This action requires double confirmation and cannot be undone.

Recommendation
Back up at least once a week, or at the end of each cycle. The daily summary emails also serve as a partial backup of each day's data.

Tips for Using Day by Day

Build a Routine
Check the app at the same times each day – perhaps when you take your morning medications, after lunch, and before bed.
Log in Real Time
Mark medications as taken when you actually take them, not later. This gives you accurate timestamps and helps avoid confusion about what you've taken.
Use the Notes
Jot down anything that might be relevant – unusual symptoms, questions for your doctor, what you ate, how you slept. These notes can be invaluable at appointments.
Review Before Appointments
Before seeing your oncologist, look back through your tracked data, daily summaries, and cycle trend charts. This helps you give accurate information about how the cycle has gone.
Celebrate Small Wins
The "Today's Win" field isn't just for show. Noting positive moments, however small, can genuinely help maintain perspective during a challenging time.
